Dear Diary:

The Christmas tree is still up.

My joke about the tree still being up in June is looking less and less far-fetched.

It appears that the spousal unit has become irrationally attached to this tree and is deeply loathe to allow it to make its natural journey To The Big Compost Pile In The Sky. I do not pretend to understand why this tree is so special, but I am becoming resigned to its presence in my life.

We went out for a candlelit dinner last night at the little auberge in our village. This was to mark our wedding anniversary which we never celebrate on the solstice (the actual date we married) because it's just too close to Christmas. We save the celebration for the post-Christmas letdown, when a little extra cheeriness is always welcome.

The auberge is a comfortable place. Walls covered with weathered barnwood, woodstoves, and the mis-matched tables and chairs scattered throughout the dining room give it a slightly shabby charm that we both like.

As we lingered over a leisurely supper for a few hours, talking about this and that, it struck me how he looks out for me. Flowers, candy, or love letters are not the sort of thing he would ever think of doing.

Instead, I'll open the trunk of my car, see a bag that I don't recognize, and open it to find an emergency kit he's made for me in case something should ever go wrong one winter day while I'm driving. If he's headed out to work before I leave for the gym, I'll come down to find that he's taken the time to shovel the snow behind my car so I don't have to, although I can do it perfectly well myself.

Oh, and here's one that touches my heart beyond all reason. In the mornings, if I come down after him, I always find my vitamin sitting on my breakfast plate. As silly as this sounds, that little gesture says to me that he wants me well and around for a very long time.

It means more to me than any flower ever could.

This template is a riff on a design by the truly talented Quinn. Because I'm a html 'tard, I got alot of pity coding to modify it from Ms. Kittay, a woman who can make html roll over, beg, and bring her her slippers. The logo goodness comes from the God of Graphics, the Fuhrer of Fonts, the one, the only El Presidente. I smooch you all. The background image is part of a painting called Higher Calling by Carter Goodrich which graced the cover of the Aug. 3, 1998 issue of The New Yorker Magazine.

Kids, don't try viewing this at home without Netscape 6 or IE 4.5+, a screen resolution of 800 X 600 and the font Mead Bold firmly ensconced on your hard drive.
