Dear Diary:

Weird things happen because of the elevation of our house.

When I woke up this morning there was about 15 cm. (six inches for the metric impaired) of snow in the yard and it was snowing heavily. The spousal unit told me I'd better pass on this morning's workout because I have to drive about twenty minutes into Vermont to get to my gym. He didn't want me on dicey roads.

I grandly waved him off. My car has new snow tires, I pointed out, and I know enough to drive slowly. He rolled his eyes as I hauled on my coat, boots, hat and gloves and sallied forth into the storm.

I am a woman on a mission.

Halfway down the hill the snow stopped. Our back road had snow, but the highway was bare. By the time I got into Vermont, the fields were green because they'd gotten rain and it washed away the little snow they'd gotten.

I felt insanely smug. Yet again, I Was Right and He Was Wrong.

I was the only person in my gym because all the sensible people had stayed off the roads due to the weather warning. After my warm-up, I sauntered over to the free weights. I picked up a ten pound weight, the weight I had been using to tone my arms in the past. I mean, really, I'd been digging most of the summer. Surely I'd kept a lot of my arm strength, right?

One bicep curl convinced me that I hadn't.

I dropped down to the 7.5 pound barbell. Surely I could handle that. By the end of my second set of reps, my arms screaming at me in protest, I realized I couldn't do that, either.

Now we come to the humiliating part. I had to go over to the corner where they store the brightly coloured, plastic-coated girlie barbells which start at 1 lb. and work up to 8 lbs.

Oh, the pain.

Oh, the humiliation.

Once I had been able to use the metal big kid barbells. Slinging that iron set free my Inner Amazon, made me want to grunt, sweat, and scratch inappropriate places.

Now I have to use what looks suspiciously like Barbie Barbells.

Oh, the pain.

Oh, the humiliation.

The thing about working out is that you have to push your body to a delicate edge. You want to fatigue your muscles, but you don't want to push so hard you hurt yourself. Especially at the beginning, it's hard to find the motivation to basically make yourself ache every other day.

In my head I know the benefits of this are enormous. My heart will be stronger, my bones denser, my body leaner. All well and good, but now I have a REAL reason to push and push hard.

Barbie Barbells.

I refuse to use those things a moment longer than I have to.

I am woman hear me grunt.
