Dear Diary:

I think you have to live in a climate like mine, where the thermometer can hover at the -30C range for weeks at a time, to truly get The Full Spring Giddy on.

Our maples are all tapped and any day now we'll start making maple syrple, The One True Elixir of Spring. It hardly seems possible that I've been running the sugar rig for the spousal unit's brother almost 30 years now. Growing up in an industrial city in the flatlands of southwestern Ontario, I never dreamed that my life would end up in these rural rhythms in the mountains of Quebec.

So much of my life is about rhythms, routines.

I know almost everyone by name now in the small gym in Vermont where I work out three mornings a week. That's how it works in small places. We all have a pretty good idea about where each of us stands about The One Subject No One Would Talk About Today, even though it dominated the tee vee screen in the cardio area.

No, instead we talked about spring and sugaring and gardens. We speculated about how long sugaring would last, if it would be a year of light or dark syrup. Glen's thinking of growing melons this summer, a real challenge in a northern climate. Me, I can hardly wait to plant the flower seeds Joey sent me.

All of us, we pretended that this was a spring day like any other.

I wish it could be.

This template is a riff on a design by the truly talented Quinn. Because I'm a html 'tard, I got alot of pity coding to modify it from Ms. Kittay, a woman who can make html roll over, beg, and bring her her slippers. The logo goodness comes from the God of Graphics, the Fuhrer of Fonts, the one, the only El Presidente. I smooch you all.
